"On the Lam"marks a return to form for band members Jason Albertini and Canaan Dove Amber -- A thoughtful sonic bender that asserts a rearticulated vision and partnership that has brought these two friends back together after a few years of individual work in various Northwest bands. --------- On The Lam is a shimmering collection of 11 tunes that that were painstakingly picked and fussed over out of 40 songs that were recorded during this time. Amber states that it was their intention of crafting sounds that harked to a more soulful 60's tradition yet attempting to give the tunes a vintage futuristic vibe, accomplished by using all analog gear and breaking down the tunes to their rawest form but staying away from traditional song structure. The result is a unique reflection on psychedelia and minimalist pop music played out like your favorite mixtape. The two play all the instruments on this record and emulate the sounds live with the help of friends. -- --- --- --- Another listing created by Zip

Helvetia resting by the Rhein

Helvetia resting by the Rhein

Helvetia who also adorns the Swiss half-franc, one-franc, and two-franc coins has sat on the parapet at the Kleinbasel bridgehead of the Mittlere Brucke since 1980.

The artist, Bettina Eichin, explains her creation as follows: One day, Helvetia left her two-franc piece, mixed with the people, and made a long journey. Her travels also took her to Basel. After an exhausting stroll through the city, she got rid of her shield, spear, and suitcase, laid her coat over the parapet, and looked reflectively down-river as she rested.

First Cup January 25, 2009

First Cup January 25, 2009

Yesterday was so exciting. We showed up in the morning and nervously watched the first few competitors of the day (a no doubt very hung-over but surprisingly put together Louie Poore being one) before getting put on the 4th Machine. Chris pulled shots while I steamed milk. Though the set up this year allowed for people waiting for the 4th Machine to watch the competitions, the way the machine was oriented left a little to be desired. Probably had to be that way for plumbing reasons. Anyway, I was having a little trouble getting the right position for steaming, and as a result kept moving milk jugs and steaming pitchers all over the place to get comfortable. Eventually, I got into a rhythm and was able to make caps and macchiatos at a fairly even pace. The left over milk would go into an empty milk jug as I had no dump sink.

Then Stephen Morrisey walks over and asks for a cap. It's been going ok by this point, so I pour the milk and get to steaming. I was using the little pitcher, but was astonished about how fast the milk was getting stupid hot.

Oh well, I poured and handed it off. I walk back over to the station to steam another set of caps. I pick up the milk jug and then it hit me. I'd just made the World Barista Champion a cappuccino with re-steamed milk from the chum bucket.

I race over, snatch the half-drunk offending beverage from his hands and hand him another. "Thanks!" he says, "That one was a little hot. What happened?"

"I'll tell you later," I said.

As soon as we're done, Renee is set to begin. We all clamber over to the seating. I grab my camera and get to work documenting our girl in action.

At the end of her go, I was happy to say she did really well. Solid performance and very few mistakes.

She seemed happy with it too!

We broke for lunch and then returned for the results. Renee was quickly called into finals, so the whole thing has to get reset for tomorrow.

And then the party began.

I finally fessed up to Stephen after a couple of beers and then got to talk to Deaton about roasting. Fun and informative!

Then off to some dance club with a whole crew of coffee nerds. We even got searched! How fancy!

Danced our butts off then rolled back to Echo Park for one last drink at the Gold Bar. Then over to Ryan's sisters where everyone was already asleep. I ended up getting some interesting accomodations. Not in real sense of the word interesting.

So this morning, we're heading over to the Sunset Junction stop for a little coffee before heading back to the event. Chris Davidson showed up last night and has been my sugar daddy ever since. He bought me this cup of Colombian, maybe the Santuario? I don't remember. And a cappuccino. I want one of these California mugs. Maybe tonight I'll pick one up.

Good luck Renee!
